How To Make A Great Self-Tape Audition

We’ve had the pleasure of working with hundreds of actors on their self-tapes over the last seven years in New York and Los Angeles. Our regular clients love our relaxed, collaborative environment. We provide well-trained actors to read with and clients always look and sound

great with our royal blue screen, professional lighting, HD camera and shotgun microphone. Also, when we edit, we do a little bit of color correction to make sure your self-tape pops off the screen when casting directors play your video.

If you can’t make it to SkyTown Entertainment, and have to tape at home or with a friend, please review this basic Self-Tape Checklist to make your audition the best it can be:

  1. Choose a plain solid color background. Ideally blue or light grey. No stains.

  2. Set up good lighting. Avoid shadows.

  3. Use good audio and shoot in a quiet space. This is so important!

  4. Frame horizontally when shooting. Shoulders up is best.

  5. Keep eyes close to viewfinder. Ideally, your reader should be behind the camera and to the left so your eyes are directed there.

  6. Get a great reader. Since you’re video will be home made, your acting work needs to be top notch.

  7. Memorize lines so you’re not tied to the page.

  8. Read carefully the instructions that come along with your self-tape request. Some casting directors are VERY specific about what they want in the video.

A high quality tape will improve your chances of getting cast, especially when casting receives an average of 1500 submissions for most roles on Actors Access. The obvious advantage of working with a professional is that you will be guided through the process, saving you time and stress, leaving you to do what you are going to be hired to do…act.
